Ottawa Doctor Announces Sexual Assault Prevention App
October 24, 2017 Ottawa, ON – Dr. Kari Sampsel, the Medical Director of the Sexual Assault and Partner Abuse Care Program at the Ottawa Hospital, is pleased to announce the launch of NightLight Consultants. With ground breaking research finding an increased number of sexual assaults occurring at large gatherings, Dr. Sampsel created NightLight Consultants to help, by blending safety planning and awareness services with technology to offer event organizers and event attendees peace of mind.
Today, NightLight Consultants announces their new app designed to keep people safe at large, public gatherings. Offering event organizers and on-site staff a variety of safety planning and awareness consulting services and the ability to find those in distress, NightLight Consultants also provides safety measures for event attendees by allowing them to easily locate friends and contact security through their mobile app, if required. The app also provides a specific site layout, ensuring volunteers, staff, and attendees can easily locate medical attention and security services.
The #MeToo campaign taking over social media has drawn attention to sexual harassment and sexual assault, highlighting how prevalent and damaging it can be for survivors. Annually, almost 500,000 Canadians report experiencing sexual assault, with more than 750 of those people seeking assistance and support in the Ottawa region alone. Of those Ottawa survivors, 98% are under 25 years old and 25% were attending a large gathering at the time of the reported assault.
“Sexual assault is a devastating and endemic problem with a ripple effect for the survivor and those around them,” says Dr. Sampsel. “NightLight Consultants allows event organizers and attendees to be proactive to prevent sexual assault in their area, at their local event. We want to be part of the solution so there are far fewer #MeToo stories.”
NightLight is now available to event organizers worldwide. More information about the consulting services and mobile app can be found on the company website at www.nightlightconsultants.com, while statistics surrounding the rates of sexual assault in Canada can be found through your local sexual assault resource. If you are, or know, a survivor of sexual assault, please contact the Sexual Assault and Partner Abuse Care Program at 613-798-5555 ext. 13770.
